Football collectors are at a disadvantage when it comes to vintage material. Baseball has a rich and full timeline of cards one can collect. Football does not have quite the cardboard history. Pre-war football card options are few. With football traditionally lagging behind baseball in popularity during the early to mid-20th century, fewer cards have survived in comparison to baseball cards.
The cards we have selected are not necessarily the rarest or most expensive cards, but several are. While these cards may only be on a dream list to most of us, there are some bargain options when it comes to collecting these cards and the sets they were issued in.
In no particular order, here are the eight cards you need in your vintage football card collection after you win the lottery.
HERITAGE AUCTIONS
1. 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions Harry Beecher
This one is easy. It’s the first football card. Ever.
And while this card predates the NFL by a good 32 years, it does feature a football player in uniform, holding a very early style of football.
