Net54 and Collectors Have Made the Discoveries

For more than a century, signatures of athletes have been treasured by collectors. Recently, though, the hobby has been shaken by some high-profile forgeries on early baseball cards.

If you’re looking for a starting point, it was a single, solitary card that set off a wildfire of controversy. On the popular collector message board, Net54, a member solicited others for an opinion on an autographed T206 card of Hall of Famer Rube Marquard that he obtained in a recent auction. The card was accompanied with a Letter of Authenticity from JSA, one of the foremost authenticators in the business. However, when the buyer sent the card to a second authenticator, SGC, for their approval, it was deemed not authentic for several reasons.
