American Way

We met Max Papis, well-known race car driver and, like many of his generation, a former kart driver, who did well in the USA, and who is becoming a reference point for many young American drivers.

Tell us about how your American experience came about?

Well, by now we can say that it is no longer just an experience, a parenthesis. Here I got married, I started a family, I live and work. America is my second home. That said, for me, Formula 1 was not what I expected, having dreamed of it throughout my career. Let me better explain: every boy in Europe follows that dream from an early age and after a good number of competitions, from karting to the various Formula (Formula 3 and Formula 3000) I’d done it all. The reality of that world, however, was very different from how one imagines it: it is always difficult to digest the fact that despite the talent we often have to contribute conspicuously to the expenses of the Team, so to speak. At the time it was common, but maybe even today it works a bit like that, being stuck because other drivers guaranteed more generous sponsors. It was hard for me to digest and when that door closed, inside of me I decided I had closed with races.
