Walk  |  Spring 2018

I recently took what, for me, was a very unusual holiday and headed off on a city break to New York. It was a trip that took me out of my comfort zone – to be honest, I prefer long-distance paths to long-haul flights, and I’m
more at home in the mountains than Manhattan. But strolling along the sidewalks was a novel experience, as was walking the High Line. This elevated greenway on the West Side was formerly a spur of the New York Central Railroad and is now a popular public trail. Central Park provided a similarly welcome respite from the concrete jungle that makes up most of the Big Apple. In many ways, this huge slice of greenery in the heart of the city is the archetypal urban park. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that New York is a walker’s paradise. The city’s grid system makes it easy to navigate, but it also means stopping to cross a street at the end of every block. And as in most major cities, traffic is a frequent hazard – especially those crazy yellow cabs. Anyone who remembers Dustin Hoffman’s famous line from Midnight Cowboy will know exactly what I mean. But it all got me thinking about what makes a walkable city, which is a key area of focus for the Ramblers. That’s why we’ve launched the Britain’s Best Walking Neighbourhood Award, which is
designed to celebrate the places that put pedestrians first.

Individuals, groups and communities from across Britain have
nominated their favourite walking neighbourhoods. With the help of Ramblers president Stuart Maconie and fellow celebrity champions, we’ve highlighted the 10 places that made the shortlist, and now we need you to help us pick a winner.
