Walk  |  Summer 2016

I’m fascinated by maps. I love to raid the Ramblers’ map library for weekend walks inspiration, tracing paths as they spread like tendrils across a landscape. Best of all is coming up with a route that joins them all together, ideally ending at a country pub. Similarly, escaping a busy road to dive down a footpath that runs along the backs of houses and gardens is one of my favourite ways to explore a town or city. Our footpath network is unique, which is why the efforts of volunteer ‘path detectives’ to map and record lost ways is so important. They’re drawing on historical maps and other evidence to claim rights of way for people to enjoy in the future. We’re also celebrating some significant cant anniversaries in this issue of walk. The Thames Path is 20 years old this year, so our route in depth examines this iconic trail’s lasting appeal. And 2016 also marks the 80th anniversary of the humble trig pillar, the squat little obelisks that are familiar landmarks for so many walkers. I hope you enjoy our feature on the vital role they played in 20th-century British map-making.
