BLACKDOWN VERMOUTH

Based in the beautiful foothills of the Blackdown Hills in Surrey, artisan spirit producer Blackdown Distillery has been busy creating some trulyinnovative tipples. They tap the local silver birch trees for sap each spring to create distinctive gin, vodka and vermouth. Birch sap is a difficult and expensive ingredient to produce as each 100 gallons of sap produces just one gallon of syrup, often referred to as “white gold”. While the gin and vodka are interesting additions to the market, the vermouth piqued our curiosity: it’s the first British white vermouth, and is made by adding a secret blend of herbs and spices to Silver Birch Wine, then fortifying it to achieve a vermouth that is delectably creamy and spicy in flavour, with hints of wormwood and chamomile.
