Tucked away among the grand neo-classical and Georgian houses that line the cobbled streets of New Town in Edinburgh, you’ll find boutique hotel Nira Caledonia. Designed in 1823 by master architect William Playfair, it was once home to famed wordsmith John Wilson, but today hides 28 rooms that blend old architecture with modern touches – some with private access to gardens. The hotel’s Blackwood’s restaurant is headed up by chef David Scott, who only uses Scottish-produced ingredients for his revamped classics menu, which uses the kitchen’s Josper grill to imbue the dishes with a smoky, charcoal flavour. The hotel is easy walking distance to the city’s key sites, and even during the lively Fringe or Hogmanay seasons you’ll find quiet comfort at Nira Caledonia. From £120/night.
