EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

The senior statesman of Edinburgh’s arts extravaganza is known for its serious, heavyweight offerings. This year, Cecilia Bartoli sings the title role in a powerful production of Norma, Bellini’s opera about love, betrayal and revenge. Acclaimed director John Tiffany presents his stunning Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. And lightening the tone is Alan Cumming, whose Sappy Songs mixes intimate secrets and raucous anecdotes with old and new ballads and torch songs. And don’t miss the opening night event, which will use projections and illuminations to transform the city’s iconic castle into an epic work of public art to a specially-compiled soundtrack by Scottish rock band Mogwai.
