Sophie Ellis-Bextor is a consummate professional, shift ing her pose with each fl ash of the camera during our photoshoot in North London. A photographer’s dream, she not only knows her best angles and how to serve face on cue, but her genetics lend themselves to being in front of the camera, too. Tall and slender, with an angular jawline and razor-sharp cheekbones – much has been made of her enviable bone structure during her career – she’s a head-turning figure on and off the page.

With nearly 20 years’ experience in the music industry – aft er a stint in indie band theaudience, she dominated the early noughties with tracks like Spiller’s ‘Groovejet (If Th is Ain’t Love)’ (UK radio’s most-played track of the decade), ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ and ‘Take Me Home’ – Sophie is back with her sixth studio album, Familia. It was heralded in July with the release of lead single, ‘Come With Us’, a funky, disco track that’s a stark contrast to the folksy sound of 2013’s post-Strictly Come Dancing album Wanderlust. Th at album was Sophie’s first fully-independent release, and paired her with Ed Harcourt, a singer-songwriter and producer who is a close friend of Sophie’s husband Richard Jones (bassist for Th e Feeling). Although somewhat off-brand musically, it debuted at number four in the UK album charts, and revived her musical fortunes aft er 2011’s dance-heavy Make A Scene, which peaked at a disappointing number 33 and ended her professional relationship with Universal Music Group.
