As a leading gay activist and campaigner, Jeffrey Weeks was on the frontline of the fight for equality for several decades.But his greatest contribution was writing Coming Out, a comprehensive account of the history of gay life in Britain, covering the period from the late 1800s until the book was first published in 1977. Now, in advance of next year’s 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of gay sex in England and Wales, Coming Out has been revised and republished – and it makes just as compelling a read.

Now aged 70 and retired as a full-time academic, Weeks lives with his long-term partner and dog in London’s Docklands, where Winq went to meet him.

I loved reading about some of the pioneers you write about at the start of the book, men who argued against anti-gay discrimination when few others dared.
