DAVID HOCKNEY AT TATE BRITAIN

PETER GETTING OUT OF NICK’S POOL, 1966; ©DAVID HOCKNEY; NATIONAL MUSEUMS LIVERPOOL, WALKER ART GALLERY

David Hockney is one of the most celebrated artists of our time and this excellent exhibition at London’s Tate Britain is a survey of over 60 examples of his work. Gay viewers might find themselves drawn to the homoerotic pool paintings that typify the work he created in LA in the 1960s. Bursting out of each canvas is the joy the boy from a dreary post-war Bradford felt to be living out his Physique Pictorial fantasies. But also make time to experience Hockney’s psychologically-probing double portraits and The Four Seasons, the video installations he made to celebrate the cycle of nature he’d missed while living in California after returning to his native Yorkshire. On until 29th May, this wonderfully-curated show follows a largely chronological order and along the way documents Hockney’s love of playing with the conventions of painting, photography and video work. Unmissable.
