Paul Sheppard, the self-proclaimed Life Doctor, discusses the mind management techniques that he uses to help people suffering from anxiety and other mental health problems

Why did you decide to call yourself Life Doctor?

I didn’t start off with this is as my business name, at first I went with Eating the Dark, which I thought was very clever but actually just left people scratching their heads. I then used Paul Sheppard Therapy, but that didn’t do well either, so a er some soul-searching I looked at what I really did which was helping people heal their minds to have better lives. ’The Life Doctor seemed to capture what I did very nicely and it stayed.

How did you get into life coaching?

I was drawn to counselling due to suffering badly with anxiety myself; I wanted to understand it so I could get rid of it. I came from an area of Bristol where being gay was a definite no-no and I suffered from the inner struggle of trying to be normal : obviously that went badly and didn’t work. I spent the next decade seeking education that would have an impact on anxiety; sadly most approaches didn’t really work. Now I feel very lucky to have explored and blended parts of therapies together, which, when combined, have a strong impact in helping create change.
