For many of us, owning a successful business and being our own boss is a major career ambition, with the lure of greater freedom, flexibility, satisfaction and, hopefully, wealth than working for someone else. But taking a leap into the unknown and setting up shop alone can be daunting, so many people look to share their business venture with a kindred spirit — and who better than their partner? But what about that age-old adage about never mixing business with pleasure? Could working together be good for business but bad for love?

We’ve spoken to five couples who’ve created their dream businesses together, from a range of men’s skincare products to a teahouse in south London. Th ey share their stories and advice for any other couples out there who are thinking of becoming partners not just in life, but in business, too.

A better lif

With the pressures and expectations of modern-day careers, many couples go from week to week feeling that they’re facing a constant battle to find enough quality time to spend with each other. Keeping up sports and hobbies, seeing friends and even taking some much-needed me’ time all cut into precious evenings and weekends that could be spent with partners. One of the benefits of working together is that you’re able to feel more satisfied with your time division, and less guilty when taking time away during a particularly busy week.

Anthony McDonough and Christopher Glebatsas run premium men’s skincare brand Lqd from Australia. Th e couple, who have a daughter, have been together for eight years and have spent the last four working full-time on the business, which oft en takes them around the world.
