A VIEW from INDIA

Krishna Omkar was born and brought up in Delhi, and lives and works in London as a corporate lawyer. He is actively involved in human rights advocacy, has been named by the Financial Times as a Future Leader in 2015 and 2016, and by Attitude in its inaugural eligible bachelors list. He is currently working with Bollywood figures on a project for LGBT+ rights in India.

It is a hot and humid night in Mumbai. The blazing day has transmuted into a sultry evening. Marine Drive promenade is teeming with Mumbaikars from all walks of life, out to enjoy some slight respite from the daytime heat. There are the young, and the old; couples stealing a few moments of privacy under the cover of darkness; those out on their own; power walkers with their brightly coloured trainers; pavement-dwellers; parents, children, and grandparents; hawkers selling candy, ice cream, and fluorescent plastic toys. As I zip past them in a cab, my heart skips a beat, anxious and excited at the same time. I am about to experience my first queer-friendly club night in India. At 32, I feel like the teenager I was when I last lived here.
