Wilbert Das, the former creative director of Diesel, tells us about escaping the fashion industry for a tranquil life in Brazil, accidently designing a hotel, and his new homewares and furniture collection

Distinctive design

“With luck some pieces are repeatable, but the aim is to not litter the world with products. The uniqueness is the beauty”

What was your role at Diesel?

It was my first and last job; I arrived there as an assistant designer then progressed to creative director and worked on all the clothing lines, the ad campaigns, and licensed products like perfumes, sunglasses, and jewellery.

I had been there for 21 years and there was a change in the direction of the company that I didn’t agree with. I was 46 by then and I was thinking I had to change career now or I would never change. The owner of the company never made me a co-owner so it was kind of easy to leave. Before I left there were some things I wanted to tick off my bucket list, so I worked on a furniture line with Moroso and a lighting collection with Foscarini. It was the last thing I did for Diesel and it helped me with my next adventure with my hotel, which was not meant to be a hotel!
