Since the Brexit vote in June, hate crime in the UK has been hitting the headlines more than ever. And alongside incidents of racially-motivated crime, it appears that the fear of hate crime due to sexual orientation is also on the up. According to the stats, the headlines, and people I’ve met, LGBT people now feel more in danger since Brexit. And it’s true. Last month, Emerald Life, the LGBT insurance provider, released YouGov research showing that LGBT people’s fear of hate crime has increased 100% in 12 months. As a keen Brexiteer, this fills me with anger. This isn’t what I voted for. But are we sure this is Brexit-sensitive?
