IGLTA

THE INTERNATIONAL GAY & LESBIAN TRAVEL ASSOCIATION (IGLTA) IS A NETWORK OF LGBT-FRIENDLY, TRAVEL-RELATED BUSINESSES AND ORGANISATIONS THAT BOASTS THOUSANDS OF MEMBERS FROM OVER 70 COUNTRIES. TO HONOUR ITS 33 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE SECTOR, WE'VE AWARDED THE IGLTA WITH THE 2016 TRAVEL AWARD, AND SPOKE TO JOHN TANZELLA, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE IGLTA, ABOUT THE ORGANISATION'S HUMBLE BEGINNINGS, ITS ADVICE FOR LGBT TRAVELLERS AND ITS GLOBAL OUTREACH FOUNDATION

THE TRAVEL AWARD

It feels like, this past year, the world has become just a little less safe and welcoming for the LGBT traveller. Is that fair, do you think?

Yes and no. We’ve certainly seen more xenophobia and homophobia at a governmental level, but at the same time, we’ve seen many businesses step up to the plate on behalf of equality for everyone. We’ve been particularly touched by the efforts of our global partners to speak out against anti-LGBT rhetoric.

What advice would you offer the LGBT traveller, before they’ve so much as picked up their passport?

Do your homework. You should have some sense of the laws and customs of a destination before diving in headfirst. Th is is true for any traveller – remember you are a guest in other people’s home city or country. And, of course, visit www.iglta.org for LGBT-friendly trip-planning ideas.
