Writers' Forum  |  239

Genre labels are used to help businesses sell books because readers know roughly where to look for the sort of thing they like.
But they often fall short when defining the work of an individual author or even a particular novel; writers will dabble with different
settings and almost every book is a crossover of some sort. ‘Literary fiction’, which we look at on page 18, can mean work that is especially poetic or demanding. It’s also a catch-all for writing that is about the
real world rather than the romantic (exciting worlds of space
travel or monsters, spys or lovelorn heiresses, etc). But the
label ‘literary’ is just as elastic as any other and such novels
can often fi t comfortably into an existing genre, even if
publishers will insist that they are breaking new ground.
So what do you think makes a story ‘literary’?
Writers’ Forum is the markets leading title for writers. Every issue features special interviews and articles with top authors and agents plus there are prize competitions totalling a massive £800.

Writers' Forum

I am Mexican, Spanish speaker and an English teacher too. As a nonnative English speaker, I can tell your articles are really inspiring for those of us dealing with the writing section of Cambridge FCE exams. To my mind, "Writers Forum" is better than "Writing Magazine". Audio extracts and something like under the microscope section of "Writing Magazine" would be my suggestions for "Writers Forum". I really enjoy your magazine. Jose Domínguez Puebla, Mexico. Reviewed Saturday, April 11, 2020
