CLARE MORRALL

The novelist, Booker-shortlisted for her debut, shares her five favourite reads with Judith Spelman

Shelf life:

C lare Morrall ‘s first published novel, Astonishing Splashes of Colour, reached the shortlist for the 2003 Booker prize, a wonderful achievement for a debut novelist. For part of the week she works as a music teacher and for the rest she concentrates on her writing. She is driven and organised and following the huge success of her first book, continues to produce books with memorable titles – When the Floods Came, Natural Flights of the Human Heart, The Language of Others. ‘Some titles I get straight away and I am happy with them and the publisher is happy with them,’ she says. She believes the world of fiction is more satisfactory for her than the world of reality. She says she finds the act of writing intellectually stimulating.
