For the first time, the shortlist for the Society of Authors’ Betty Trask Prize includes a self-published novel – Speak its Name by Kathleen Jowitt. The rest of the shortlist is: Harmless Like You, Rowan Hisayo Buchanan; Born on a Tuesday, Elnathan John; The Hollow Men, Rob McCarthy; Five Rivers Met on a Wooded Plain, Barney Norris, and Fallow, Daniel Shand.
• The six shortlisted titles for the Arthur C Clarke Award for best science fiction novel of the year published in 2016 are: A Closed and Common Orbit, Becky Chambers; Ninefox Gambit, Yoon Ha Lee; After Atlas, Emma Newman; Occupy Me, Tricia Sullivan; Central Station, Lavie Tidhar; The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead. The winner will be announced on 27 July at Foyles bookshop in London.
• The shortlist for the 2017 Caine Prize for African Writing is Lesley Nneka Arimah, Who Will Greet You at Home; Chikodili Emelumadu, Bush Baby; Bushra al-Fadil, The Story of the Girl Whose Birds Flew Away; Arinze Ifeakandu, God’s Children Are Little Broken Things; Magogodi oaMpela Makhene, The Virus. The winner of the £10,000 prize will be announced on 3 July, after WM has gone to press.
