Tony Rossiter explores great words from great writers
Yes, writing is a lonely business. You have to shut out the world around you and concentrate on the words you’re putting onto the paper or the screen in front of you. Some writers can work with noise and people around them – in a café or pub or train. Alf Wight (aka James Herriot) famously did his writing in front of the television, with his family around him. Some writers listen to music while they work; others need undisturbed silence. We’re all different. But whatever environment you work in, when it comes to putting words onto the screen or the page, you’re on your own.
