In the 1950s, with a writing career in mind, I had an interview with the Daily Mirror. At the time all I wanted to do was be a newspaper reporter. The interview went well but there was a snag. I was offered the position of a messenger for three years, but with National Service looming at eighteen, it seemed I might be out of work after this. Sadly, I turned the offer down. This was the time when you were in a job until you were 65 and then retired. At the time this seemed the right thing to do. I tried local papers but there were no vacancies.
