Ihave just been awarded a prize for a short story in a writing competition. Sadly it is not going to change my life (I came third and received a cheque for a princely £10). I’ve mentioned competitions here in the past, but this made me think about them again. Of course they can act as a spur to action: giving you a topic, a deadline, a word count and perhaps prompt the writing of something that would not have happened otherwise. Besides you might win. (And that might mean more than £10!)
