Hannah’s bold colour choices have given her bedroom depth, warmth and character to create a chic boutique hotel-style space
When Hannah Powell, 40, moved to her 1930s home she was kept busy with work and family, so for several years her bedroom was left undecorated. ‘It was boring which frustrated me as I’m a fan of strong décor and I tried to inject some life into the space with cheerful bed linen and bright artwork, but it was still a bland box,’ she explains. Finally, in the spring of 2017, Hannah decided to start the project. ‘It felt like the right time and I’d seen some images of bedrooms that were dark and dramatic with metallic accents that I loved and these spurred me into action.’
STEP ONE The first thing to do was to get some order. ‘I had a massive clear out!’ laughs Hannah. ‘I had too much stuff crammed into every drawer and the wardrobe was overflowing. I took bags to charity and sold lots on eBay too.’ Hannah then began redecorating, having seen pictures of bedrooms with rich confident colour schemes, she thought that navy walls would give her the cosy depth of colour she needed. ‘Although it is a super dark shade, the ceilings are high and the picture rails have white above so I hoped it wouldn’t be overwhelming. I found a gorgeous deep blue paint and decided to team it with one wall of patterned wallpaper to add a metallic element.’ With help from family the decorating was done in a few days. ‘It was such a dramatic look – I loved it – the wooden furniture looked gorgeous against the navy.’
