A vegan’s guide to… Copenhagen

Sally-Anne Bedford visits the capital of Denmark, split across the islands of Zealand and Amager, and finds out what’s on the menu apart from pastries…

Where to eat…

I have a Danish great grandmother and I hold onto that teeny tiny part of my gene pool for dear life, hoping just a smidge of ‘Scandicool’ may have been passed down. After all, who wouldn’t want to be part of a country that is regularly voted number one in the list of happy places to live in the world? It’s a country that has given us Nordic Noir, Lego, Hans Christian Andersen and…um well, bacon. Denmark is famous for being one of the largest bacon and pork exporters in the world, so I had to wonder other than lifestyle-wise what, if any, vegan food would be available to this distant Dane travelling to Copenhagen this summer.

There is a great feeling of freedom to be who you want to be in Copenhagen, if you want to embrace the healthy life you can cycle, run or walk your way around the city and they have made it accessible for you. Likewise if you want to just drink a beer and smoke a cigarette by the waterfront, then you are able to do that without being made to feel like an outcast. Women are free to sunbathe topless by the waterfront, unharassed and everyone just gets on with their life while being tolerant of others. Freedom to ‘be’ has to be one of the keys to happiness and, of course, is a freedom and tolerance we, as vegans, all want for our fellow animals, which brings me nicely onto the important issue… food.

The choice you will have when you land in Copenhagen is staggering. The amount of restaurants is on a par with New York and Los Angeles and the quality is matched and sometimes exceeded. I defy any meat eater not to join their vegan companion in enjoying this alternative Danish food and not feel the better for it.
