Dairy is slowly becoming less favoured by many non-vegans as a result of vegan activism and the growing understanding of the treatment of cows and calves within the dairy industry. Plant and nut based milks are becoming increasingly popular and sales are on the rise as people look for alternatives to include in their tea, coffee and cereals to name but a few uses of milk.
Drinking and eating dairy products has been drummed into us from a young age with the argument that we need calcium to have strong bones and the best source is dairy. However, this myth we get sold that dairy is the primary source for this is just that: a myth. Many dairy-alternative milks have more calcium than dairy in some instances, and although they are often fortified to contain this, almost all dairy-alternatives have more calcium per 240ml than cow’s milk, with the exception of coconut milk.
