New York City hospitals to prescribe vegan diet to chronically ill patients
The Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine Programme (PBLMP) is going to be rolled out into hospitals in New York City, which will be overseen by Michelle McMacken, MD. The scheme is able to offer treatment to 100 patients who suffer with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity and high cholesterol. Each patient will receive a tailored nutrition plan, medical evaluations and support from medical staff that are trained in plant-based living. The programme has been made available after a $400,000 investment from NYC Health, following a campaign by Brooklyn Borough president, Eric L. Adams, who switched to a vegan diet in 2016 to improve his health.
