SHOCKER FOR THE AGES

GETTYIMAGES

While growing up a caddy at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Francis Ouimet oft en dreamed about being the one asking for the club and not the one handing it over. He got his wish, and more, during the 1913 U.S. Open played on the very course the then-20-year-old had spent so many summer days looping for others.

In a stunning finish that still resonates today, Ouimet (center in this photo) looked like anything but a nervous kid, beating British stars Harry Vardon (at left in this photo) and Ted Ray (right) in a playoff to win the major. Look how young Ouimet looks standing between two legends. Even more remarkable was that Ouimet had a 10-year-old, Eddie Lowery, caddy for him. Th is may just seem like ancient history to many, but it’s far more – far more! – than that. Look at this photo: The two Brits can hardly believe they lost to a 20-year-old kid.
