Elvis Presley
The new HBO two-part three-hour documentary on the life of Elvis Presley may have as big an impact on today’s generation as the Singer Presents Elvis TV special (aka ‘68 Comeback Special) had on the previous lot. And tied in with the TV programme is this 3CD deluxe boxset, featuring not only music from the show but also 18 Elvis hits, live recordings, alternate versions, and, wow, a hardcover book.
There have been Elvis compilations galore, but this is particularly worthwhile as it traces the development of The King’s progression from blues and country covers to the pop colossus he became. And the third CD in the set is interesting since it features the original R&B cuts that inspired The King. There’s even input from Elvis’ mother Gladys, who chose to commit her take on Home Sweet Home to vinyl.
Anyone lucky enough to see the documentary will know that the huge amount of otherwise unseen footage is remarkable, and it’s great to be reminded of why The King was, and remains, The King
