HOLDER’S GRIP LOOSENS

So Jason Holder has been moved on as West Indies Test skipper. His fellow Bajan, Kraigg Brathwaite – like Holder, another articulate and diligent cricketer – will take over, following a superb series win under his leadership in Bangladesh last month. After the best part of six years in a job which has taken up most of his twenties, Holder will return to the ranks with the West Indies in better shape, at least on the field, than when he found them. I spoke to him last month before the announcement, and he was quite defiant that the work to infuse a new kind of seriousness into their cricket was ongoing. “I’m not a quitter,” he told me. One hopes for the future of Caribbean cricket that his removal from the top job doesn’t affect his motivation. As one of the world’s premier all-rounders, he’s as crucial to the cause as ever.
