HAVE YOUR SAY
I really liked your Q&A with a reader who’d had a hysterectomy (June issue, p12). I also had one last summer, aged 42. I run with a club, Raheny Shamrock, and I race a lot. But all the post-hysterectomy advice I found online seemed aimed at women keen to return to more gentle pursuits – I couldn’t find guidelines for getting back to racing and pushing myself.
I loved your advice to listen to your surgeon, listen to your body and start with gentle walking. In addition, I found consistency was key – at first I did very little, just gentle walks of five minutes or so. But I did them twice a day, and prioritised rest. I also went for some one-toone physio sessions to help rebuild my core safely. Eight weeks post-op I started a walk/jog programme, and 12 weeks post-op I went back to Pilates (with supervision from the physio).
