GET YOUR KIDS active!

BAGS OF ENCOURAGEMENT, PLUS A HEALTHY DOSE OF FUN, MAY ENSURE YOUR CHILDREN HAVE A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH RUNNING, AND SPORT, FOR THEIR WHOLE LIVES

HEALTHY FAMILIES

As runners, we know first-hand the benefits of exercise, not just on our fitness and health, but on our mental wellbeing and happiness. So it’s only natural that we want to encourage our children to follow in our footsteps and pull on their running shoes.

Looking at the statistics on activity levels in children, it seems more kids could benefit with a nudge to do just that. The amount of physical activity recommended for children to aid healthy development and to maintain a healthy weight is 60 minutes a day. But according to Public Health England, just 23 per cent of boys and 20 per cent of girls aged five-11 meet the national recommended level of activity.

It might be that you’re already motivating your children to be active without even realising it by setting an example for them. Wendy Rumble, founder of runningbuggies.com has been taking her daughters, aged three and five, out on runs with her from an early age. She says: “I’m a firm believer in the motto, ‘They can’t be what they can’t see’. I see them copying my speech and mannerisms, so it makes sense that they will be more likely to be active, having witnessed it from the start.”

About Women’s Running

This issue of WR celebrates how crucial, and inspiring, families are to every athlete. Yes, you are an athlete! I’m writing this in the middle of the school summer holidays; my training plans have disintegrated, our house has been swallowed by mess, and my stress levels are higher than I’d like. I defnitely don’t feel like an athlete! Enjoy the issue!
