Is it achievable to think about running your first ultra marathon to celebrate your 50th birthday?
Whatever age you are, ultra marathons can be extremely tough – both physically and mentally. Is attempting to run one for the first time in your 50s too much of a challenge?
Marie Howarth, product manager for Marathon Tours & Travel (marathontours.co.uk) and a keen marathon runner
Yes! Running an ultramarathon is achievable in your 20s, 30s and 40s so why not in your 50s? What’s to stop you? 50 is the new 30, after all, so the world is your oyster. Ultra marathons are tests of mental and physical strength and I wouldn’t advocate running one without the proper preparations and training, but age alone cannot and should not be a barrier.
