Waiting for Gertie

‘I swear that walk from the bus stop gets longer each time we come here.’

‘My feet hurt.’

‘Well sit down on this bench and take your shoes off for a while. We’ve plenty of time.’

‘I only wear them for funerals these days.’

‘Not many weddings at our age.’ ‘I can’t think of the last wedding I went to.’

‘Wasn’t it your Sandra’s girl? Melody?’

‘Melanie. Ooh, that’s better.

Do you want a sweet? I’ve got some in my bag.’

‘What are they?’

‘Toffees, I think.’

‘You know I can’t have toffees.

Not since that time I nearly swallowed my filling.’

‘I’ll check.’

‘It’s all right. They’ll be here soon and then we can go in.’

‘I’ve found a barley-sugar. You can pick the fluff off; it’s only bits of tissue from the bottom of my bag.’

‘I think I’ll give it a miss.

There’ll be hymns at the service. You can’t sing hymns with a mouth full of barley-sugar, with or without the fluff.’

‘Please yourself. I’ll put it back, in case you want it later; after all that singing.’

‘She’s late.’

‘We’re early.’

‘Are you sure it was today?’

‘What?’

‘Are you sure it was today?’

‘Was what today?’

‘The funeral.’

‘What funeral?’
