There is a style of travel writing in which the elusive concept of ‘voice’ matters. Of course, some such writing is essentially factual and devoid of much feeling about who is writing it. And is none the worse for that. If the reader is simply wanting a review of a place, or a list of possible places to stay for example, then what might be seen as personal ramblings may be regarded as a distraction that contributes nothing to the content.
