Poetry competition: Try a triolet

Enter our competition for short poems with a repeating rhyme pattern with advice from judge Alison Chisholm

The triolet is not one of poetry’s giants, but it’s a charming form that can be just right for a little cameo of an idea that will accommodate some repetition. The repetition helps to make it memorable, so a light form is not necessarily slight, but has the capacity to communicate a message.

The form was devised in France, and its earliest examples appeared in the 1200s. Although it was used in English poetry, it fell out of favour until Robert Bridges, Poet Laureate from 1913 to 1930, reintroduced it.
