Afriend of mine is, like me, self-employed. As a jobbing builder he uses power tools, brushes and paint rather than a computer and printer (and spends a lot less time sitting down than I do). We both work irregular hours, often with deadlines to get a project done and approved, and with no corporate back-up of any kind. We’re part of a large workforce of sole employees, with no water-cooler gatherings to have a whinge about the state of the nation, the working conditions or our fellow employees (we don’t have any).
