One of the questions most asked of novelists is ‘where do you get your ideas from?’ For most, finding ideas is not the issue, it’s deciding which ideas to go with and how to use them.

I have a large folder on my computer, full of potential book ideas; outlines of plots, character sketches, newspaper articles or features that have made me think, ‘that’s a great idea for a story’. Deciding which of these to take further is not always easy. It’s a process of mulling, thinking and asking questions about a story’s potential.
