My writing day: Julia Golding

With three author names and three writing styles, this author has a lot to pack in her day, she tells Lynne Hackles

Julia Golding writes middle grade fiction. As Eve Edwards she covers historical YA and writes contemporary YA under the name of Joss Stirling. Why three names?

‘Creatively, it’s fun, like wearing the right kind of outfit for the right occasion,’ she says. ‘All writers create a kind of version of themselves when they write and I do this more consciously under a different name. The practical explanation is that it’s a way of smoothing out income flow. By branding different kinds of books under different names I can publish more than one a year and not compete with myself on my own shelf in a bookshop. It also builds three different loyal readerships that I can target more closely with news on the kind of books that they like. Also if one genre isn’t sought after by publishers for a time, I usually have something else to offer.
