What do you do when an agent wants to take you on… once you’ve heavily rewritten your book? Jane Wenham-Jones advises a reader

After many months of trying, I have been offered representation by an agent. She said she had a publisher in mind for my book but that she thought the manuscript required a few changes in order to make it more commercial. Of course I was excited and delighted and eager to agree to anything that would help her sell my novel. She promised to email ‘soon’. I have waited four weeks to get these notes and now they have arrived I am upset and disappointed.

What she is asking for is basically a different book. The changes are profound and I not only have no idea how to effect them but I am not at all sure I want to. As I see it, it will no longer be the book I wrote and am proud of. A couple of my writer friends have suggested that I self-publish and keep my integrity, while another has said I would be mad to pass up this opportunity to have an agent and be properly published. The third alternative I suppose is to self-publish this book, and write a new one more along the lines she has suggested. What would you do?
