I’ve read somewhere that the very first named writer was Sin-liqe-Unninni. He it was who put the Epic of Gilgamesh down in its most complete form on twenty clay tablets well over 1000 years ago.
It’s a lengthy patchwork of myths and strange characters with Gilgamesh seeking immortality, almost finding it, then losmg the means of it to a lucky snake.
Sin-liqe was a sort of amanuensis, or editor. How did he cope when, in chipping away, he made the clay tablet equivalent of a typo? Would he hurl it away in disgust, angry with himself? Or would he sigh, reach for a virgin tablet and start all over again?
