Travel can be challenging and perhaps needs some rules if one is to cope with it well. I think it was the late Alan Whicker who said that the first rule of travel was to learn a phrase in the local language: he recommended My friend will pay. One rule for travel writers must be to be descriptive. Such description may be factual: details of a hotel, services on a particular airline, details of currency or about which electric plug is needed to charge the inevitable array of gadgets that most travellers now seem to find essential. But the challenge is more with other aspects that need describing, from the scenery to a person met wandering around a city centre.
