Claudia breaks up the white wall by leaning a black wooden ladder against the wall to display Coco’s scarves and handbags
Coco Goldstein, 13, who lives with her mum, Claudia, dad, Andy and older sister Sophia, 14, in a four-bedroom house in Loughton, Essex, had been asking her mum about redecorating her bedroom. Having gone off the girlie floral look in her old room, Coco craved something a bit more grown up and wanted desperately to update it. Her mum, Claudia, agreed that the room could do with a brand new look and they both started thinking about colour schemes. ‘The floral wallpaper didn’t suit Coco’s personality so we began our search for a more contemporary look that will last throughout her teenage years,’ explains Claudia.
STEP ONE Coco and Claudia started looking through magazines for ideas but it was a local clothes shop that inspired the striped feature wall. ‘We were having a shopping spree and noticed the black and white wallpaper. It looked amazing against the minimal interior and we both agreed a monochrome scheme would be perfect for Coco’s bedroom,’ she says. Claudia didn’t want the room to be overpowered with the stripes so just wallpapered one wall and painted the remaining walls in a fresh white. Coco also inherited her mum’s old bed when she bought her new one. ‘I much prefer this bed as it has a really high dramatic headboard, but the colour was all wrong,’ says Coco. It was upholstered in a brown fabric, that didn’t work with their new scheme, so Claudia got in touch with an upholsterer to ask her to recover the bed in a black fabric. ‘Claire Platten came highly recommended so I arranged a time for her to come to measure the bed.’ Claudia chose a black faux leather to transform the bed.
