Our room is brimming with rustic charm

Re-instating a working fire and opting for budget-savvy upcycled, second-hand and high street buys, helped Nicola Pond create a cosy living space
Restoring the original inglenook to its former glory and fitting a wood-burner has brought period authenticity to Nicola’s living room, while an eclectic mix of old and new ensures the room is now a welcoming space in which to entertain family and friends

When Nicola Pond, moved into her two-bedroom Georgian home in Westgate-on-Sea, with fiancé, James Webb, it was very tired and dated, but packed with the period features she loved. ‘My favourite had to be the lovely inglenook in the living room, so I was really disappointed to discover that it contained an old back boiler, which would need removing before I could install the working fireplace I dreamed of,’ she recalls. However, undeterred, Nicola soon set about putting her plan into action.

Meanwhile, on page 36, we’ve scoured the high street for the best hardworking furniture that will help you make the most of the space in any room of your house. Few of us are happy with how much room we have in our homes, so these smart storage solutions will really make a difference. And don’t forget to look at our fantastic makeovers this month (p.24) for some inspiring ways to make your living room look gorgeous on a budget. If you’re hoping to cut back on your energy bills over the coming months, then make sure you check out our round-up of the best eco buys for your kitchen on page 48, while in our home improvement section (p.106) we take a closer look at which eco-friendly updates will really help you cut your carbon footprint as well as your fuel bills.
