Welcome to this digital issue of DANZA&DANZA International, in which you’ll discover many protagonists of the current scene, along with a tribute to Paul Taylor, the great American master who passed away this summer. From this issue new international contributors have joined us and we are very happy with this opening.
From the inner yearnings of a star like Natalia Osipova, who’s always ready for new challenges, to the poetic world of the young Russian choreographer Vladimir Varnava, to the French former étoile Laurent Hilaire one year into his current job as Artistic Director of the Stanislavsky Ballet in Moscow, there’s plenty to pique your interest. We also dig deeper into topics such as the current situation for dance professionals in Tehran, through the words of Iranian choreographer Sina Saberi. Another choreographer on the rise is Christos Papadopoulos, from Greece, whom we met to get to know him better.
A selection of reviews from Italy and across Europe cround off the issue, with the Bolshoi Ballet at La Scala in Milan, Alain Platel’s “Requiem pour L.”, Rome Opera Ballet’s “Sleeping Beauty” in the production by Jean-Guillaume Bart; Angelin Preljocaj’s “Gravity” and Ouramdane’s “Franchir la nuit” from the Biennale de la danse in Lyon. From London come reports on Royal Ballet’s “Mayerling”, “Pure Dance” at Sadler’s Wells; then there’s Sasha Waltz’s “Exodos” in Berlin, alogn with some ideas on what to put under the Christmas tree, and as always the calendars of upcoming performances. Enjoy!
