DANZA&DANZA International

May/June 2024 This issue we focus on the Italian choreographer Roberto Zappalà, the artistic director behind his eponymous company, based in Sicily at his impressive headquarters Scenario Pubblico, which has been recognised by the Italian Ministry for Culture as a National Production Centre. Zappalà is working on his latest creation Trilogia dell’estasi, a reenactment of three iconic titles by the Ballet Russes that’s slated to premiere at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Florence. Also in this edition, we interview the artist Leïla Ka, a revelation on the French dance scene; and we consider how art and life are interwoven and shared by a couple of dancers from San Carlo Theatre Ballet in Naples, Ètoile Claudia D’Antonio and Soloist Stanislao Capissi. We’ve got details of the dance festivals we can look forward to up and down the country this summer, and we take a deep dive into the role of choreography over the decades in productions of ancient tragedies at the Greek Theatre in Syracuse, Sicily. We also pay tribute to a woman who has been one of Italian dance’s leading lights for the past sixty years, Cristina Bozzolini, whose autobiography was recently published. We have reviews of La Scala Theatre Ballet and the Rome Opera Ballet for you, along with Saburo Teshigawara, François Chaignaud/Aymeric Hainaux, and from London the Yorke Dance Project and the Sydney Dance Company. And we review Neumeier’s Lady of the camellias at the Wiener Staatsballett, starring two Italian dancers: Elena Bottaro, appointed Principal dancer following this performance and Davide Dato. Enjoy!
