Backtrack issue June 2024
Backtrack was first published in 1987 with the aim of presenting British railway history. At first quarterly and then bi-monthly, Backtrack went monthly in 1995 and has gone from strength to strength, justifying its founder’s identification of a niche in the railway publishing market for a high quality historical journal.

Britain's leading historical railway journal

"Britain's leading historical railway journal" is the claim and strapline which appears at the top of the front cover of every issue. As a subscriber who has been "hooked" on the magazine for a decade now, I consider that to be true. Other magazines cover the history of Britain's railways to greater and lesser degrees but I believe that Backtrack does it best.
Each issue contains an eclectic mix of articles covering many and varied aspects of railway history, not just locomotives or line histories and not just steam, such as others concentrate on. Such byways as signalling and ticketing receive attention from time to time and the selection of colour, as well as black-and-white, illustrations is magnificent.
Finally, modern traction and history (up to about a decade ago) get a share of the attention too and particularly interesting are those articles which look at the social history and the political background.
This is the only British historical railway journal with referenced articles.
