Airliner World  |   February 2022
In the February 2022 edition of Airliner World, we celebrate 40 years since the Boeing 757 first took to the skies. We explore the origins of the highly successful narrowbody, from design to service-entry, and its rise to prominence, including a look at the stretched -300 version and discuss the 757’s appeal as a valuable cargo platform. A technical cutaway of the -200 along with key facts and figures on the 757 programme are also provided.
Elsewhere, editor-at-large Gordon Smith attended a prestigious invite-only event in London as Group CEO of Qatar Airways, Akbar Al Baker, took the floor to answer hot-topic questions including those on the Airbus A350 and 777X. Meanwhile, away from more traditional airliners, Andreas Spaeth experienced a rare chance to fly like a billionaire onboard VistaJet’s state-of-the-art Bombardier Global 7500.
Shifting from contemporary to historic, we have not one, but two fascinating book extracts covering chapters of South African Airways and Air Atlantique. We also investigate the VFW-Fokker 614’s troubled development and service career as well as, intriguingly, how one example is continuing to train aircraft engineers in the UK.
To round off, we journey to Ireland to hunt increasingly rare Fokker 50 operations, examine how medical emergencies are dealt with at 35,000ft, and go sightseeing in Toronto with FlyGTA. Additionally, we present snapshots of Libyan aviation from 2009 and Lufthansa Cargo’s farewell to the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F.
