Classic Land Rover Magazine  |  Family Cars of the 1960s
The 1960s was a time of great change for British people –baby boomers born in the wake of the Second World War were finally coming of age, and the motoring face of the nation was changing as a result. The youth wanted cars – not motorbikes and sidecars like their forebears – while those with more fortunate bank balances wanted to drive something more modern, more swish, and more impressive.
Families in Britain found themselves behind the wheel with higher frequency than ever before. Whether that meant borrowing your dad’s Humber Hawk, buying your first Mini, or anything in between, those motoring memories of a decade that revolutionised the way we lived have been with us ever since.
It’s no coincidence that at any car show you care to visit the majority of exhibits will have been designed or built between 1960 and 1969. And that’s what this bookazine is all about – family cars to suit all tastes and budgets from a decade that arguably changed culture more than any decade since. This is a nostalgic look back at the cars that we, our parents, and our grandparents drove while raising their families.
