Follow Tony Underhill to paint your version of decorative Portuguese tiles

TONY’S TOP TIPS

Practise drawing circles

• To draw freehand squares for the tiles, lightly place a vertical centre line and a grid of dots by eye; adjust as necessary and join the dots. (See illustration for Step 1 on page 34.)

For circles, hover your hand over the paper with your little finger resting gently on the paper and move your arm and shoulder to draw a series of ‘ghost’ circles. Then, keeping the circular movement going, lightly lower your pencil onto the paper.

Embrace the inevitable imperfections as part of the charm and character of freehand drawing.

TONY’S TOP TIPS

• To draw freehand squares for the tiles, lightly place a vertical centre line and a grid of dots by eye; adjust as necessary and join the dots. (See illustration for Step 1 on page 34.)
